Tips to Manage Your Device Storage

Is your device running low on storage space? Do you keep getting bugged with notifications telling you that your storage is full, and you have no idea how to resolve it? Fear not as this is a problem faced by many of us and we are here to help you sustain your storage space using these five simple tips.

1. Delete unwanted files

The first, and likely the most straightforward way, is to do a clean up. Performing a scan on your device may reveal applications that are rarely used, duplicated photos, or even old files that are no longer needed. It would be a good idea to remove them wherever necessary. You can consider downloading 'Files' by Google, which organises files into different categories such as 'old screenshots' and 'large files' for you to inspect and delete.

2. Try external storage options

Can’t bear to part with your favourite photos? External storage options got you covered! You can choose to get a microSD card, a thumb drive, or a hard disk for extra space to store your data. Simply drag and drop the files you wish to transfer them into. All of them work the same way and you should decide which one to get based on your needs and budget.

3. Store files online

You may want to import the thousands of images from your device album into online storage applications like 'Cloud', 'Dropbox' or 'Google Drive'. Alternatively, you can turn on 'Auto backup' so you don't have to do it manually. Unlike hard disks and thumb drives, an advantage to using online storage applications is that your files would be kept safe and sound since they will not be lost to physical damages.

4. Clear app cache

All applications have cache, which lets applications like browsers, games, and streaming services store temporary files. These temporary files can be cleared by going into Settings > Storage > Clear cache. Devices of different brands and models may have variations of this very function, but in general, cache clearing can be done in the Settings. Don't worry, doing this will not delete any important data or the application itself.

5. Download a cleaning application if your device does not already have one

Lastly, if all of the above is just too much work for you, another option would be to download an application that does all the job in your stead! There are many applications you can choose from, and you can start by searching keywords like 'Booster' or 'Cleaner' in the application store.

‘CCleaner’ and ‘All-in-one Toolbox’ are some of the better options that are free and have been proven to work. Apart from cleaning cache and residual files, they also provide features like identifying bad or duplicated photos for you to delete.

'CCleaner' identifies applications you don’t use often, hibernates certain applications to save battery, and shows you large files that are taking up a big portion of your storage space.

'All-in-one Toolbox' includes a Central Processing Unit (CPU) cooler and speed booster.

With that said, most devices come with their own designated cleaners that can be found by searching on the device. Oftentimes, they are already effective enough.

There are so many things we want to do that are heavily dependent on our devices. As a result, we save many files and applications that eat up our already limited storage space. Applying these storage-freeing techniques may just keep your device as good as new for you to have a pleasant experience while using them.
